Longhorn Skull, Abilene, KS

$2,800.00

48 × 36 inches unframed

Mixed media painting on canvas

Materials: paper, pattern paper, ephemera, marker, adhesive, ink, acrylic and oil paint on canvas

Artist’s Notes:

This piece honors the artistic legend of Georgia O’Keeffe and my connection to her as an artist. We share the same hometown of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. O’Keeffe famously saw bones not as symbols of mortality, but as vibrant forms full of life and energy.

I saw my first live longhorns on a weekend trip to Abilene, Kansas and felt astonished by them. Every muscle ridden part of the longhorn seems sculpted to endure sun, dust, prairie winds and predators. Their weaponous horns stretch wide in sweeping arcs of polished bone, curving with a grace that defies their weight.

This piece depicts a longhorn skull floating above rocky terrain, framed by the Kansas prairie—a landscape as layered and lush as any rainforest, forever in a cycle of rebirth. Through this piece, I hope to capture the signs of power and quiet resilience woven through nature.
